Narrative

William was a Quarter-Master Sergeant in the Great War, he served in the Middle-East against the Turks. After the war he attended a Glasgow teaching college and then taught in a very rough school in Limehouse, London. Wiliam married Florence Hambleton in1922 and lived in Forest Gate until 1927, when they moved to Southend-on-sea, Essex. He successfully applied for the headship of the Sacred Heart Primary School, Southchurch, in 1934. He was evacuated with the school to Mansfield during the Second WorldWar. He returned with the school to Southend mid-war. He retired 1951/52 due to failing health and spent his time tending the priest's garden that adjoined the school. Cause of death, Lung Cancer.
