Narrative

Elizabeth CHICK, married to a John Hyatt, at Saints. Peter & Paul, Shepton Mallet, Somerset on 03 Jul 1766. (Freereg Banns 4540)
addendum...
1766 3 July: Marriage between John Hyatt, of Shepton Mallet, & Elizabeth Chick, of Shepton Mallet, after Banns. Minister: T. Wickham, Rector. Witnesses: Richd Waite & John Byrt. [Shepton Mallet, Som., Marriages 1764-1768 Register, p.29, Entry 116.]

There is NO Elizabeth or Betty Chick in the Shepton Mallet baptisms or christenings that I can find yet. John Hyatt was not from Shepton Mallet either, so there is little hope of tracing Elizabeth Chick as it appears the place of origin is not being correctly recorded.

In the "Universal British Directory 1793-1798", Elizabeth Hyatt is described as the 'victualler' or landlady of the Cross Keys. This suggests that her husband, John, had died before 1798 at the latest.

On 16 February 1809, Elizabeth Hyatt, "widow", signed her will, leaving everything to her son, Robert: "Whereas my Son Robert Hyatt for many years past has lived with me and taken great care of my Business without whose assistance I could not have managed the same and also otherwise assisted me in my Concern I therefore as a token of gratitude give and bequeath all my Household Goods and Furnitures, Stock in Trade and all other my effects of whatever description that I shall die possessed of unto my said son Robert".

On 10 August 1819, Elizabeth Hyatt's son, Robert was sworn as her sole executor, showing that she had died by this date. Her effects were valued at Đ100.

In 2008, Đ100 from 1819 is worth Đ6,250.00 using the retail price index. OR Đ73,800.00 using average earnings....
