Listed as How on 1852 census, Howe in 1841... By 1861 the family moved from Suffolk to Plaistow, Essex. George became a Carman, later by 1871 George was a greengrocer with his Wife.
A Carman was a driver of (horse-drawn) vehicles for transporting goods. Carmen were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels. A Carter typically drove a light two wheeled carriage. Also sometimes someone who drove horse-drawn trams was called a Carman.
