William Corder was the son of John Corder born 1762 and Mary Baalham, married 13/03/1792. He had brothers Thomas, James and John. Also sisters Hannah and Mary. His brother Thomas drowned attempting to cross a frozen pond. His father and three brothers all died within 18 months of each other and only William remained to run the farm with his mother. William fathered a child by Maria Marten who already had 2 illegitimate children, one of whom by Williams brother Thomas. William and Maria's child only lived a month or so and there is no recorded burial. Rumours circulated about the death of Corder and Marten's child. Both claimed that they had taken their dead child to be buried in Sudbury, but no records of this could be discovered and no trace of the burial site of the child was ever found. William Corder also had a sister called Sarah. There had been another Thomas born to his parents but he died as an infant in 1794. Regarding whether he had any surviving descendants: After the murder of Maria, He was swiftly married to a young teacher called Mary Moore, after advertising for a wife in a London Newspaper. Together they ran a small school until his arrest for the murder and his subsequent removal to Bury St Edmunds. At the time of his arrest his young wife was pregnant. I have been unable to find out what the child was or anything concerning it's life. It may therefore be correct to assume that he does have direct living descendants. Regarding whether there were any other Corder or Baalham marriages, in the Polstead parish records: John Corder married Mary Baalham by licence on 13/03/1792. These were the parents of William. James Baalham married Sarah Corder on 25/11/1828.This Sarah may have been William's sister.
