Re the older two pictures of 6 Hoxton Square: The basement was where the servants were then on the left Arthur Hyatt lived with his family and on the right lived William or George (as they all had a go in the business at one time or other). The two floors above was where the business was ran as the light was best there for sewing. **************************************** Email reply from David Nicholson, Architect. Date: 01/23/05 11:23:14 To: Jon Hyatt Subject: 5&6 Hoxton Square I have been passed your email enquiry in regard to the above. We purchased this building in September 1993 from the London Borough of Hackney and developed it to provide small office and studio spaces. I attach photos showing the front and rear taken at that time and you can see it was in a very poor state of repair. We understand prior to that it had been derelict for some 15 years having previously been used as municipal offices by the Council. I would guess that Hackney Council acquired the site together with the buildings at the rear from the London Electricity Board who operated a power station here in the early part of the 20th century. When we developed the building it seemed that much of the interior structure was of later construction than the front facade and so I'm not sure how much of it, as it is now, would be recognisable to your ancestors. Also if you look at the Ordnance Survey map for 1893 you can see the property extended much further to the rear. It may be that the present building was constructed after this date. Incidentally, the 1893 map notes the occupier of No. 6 as A&W Hyatt, tassel and girdle manufacturers. I'm sorry I can't give you any more definite information. I'd be interested to know if you discover any more about the history of this building. Yours sincerely David Nicholson
